- MedWatch Safety Alert for Arava
The FDA recently announced a new boxed warning for the risk of severe liver injury associated with Arava (leflunomide), a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) used to treat rheumatoid arthritis in adult patients. The decision to add the boxed warning is based on adverse event reports of severe liver injury, including fatal liver failure. To reduce this risk it is recommended that patients should not receive the drug if they have pre-existing liver disease or ALT greater than two times the upper limit of normal. Caution should be exercised when patients are taking other hepatotoxic drugs in combination with leflunomide. Liver enzymes should be monitored and therapy discontinued if the ALT rises to greater than two times the upper limit of normal. MedWatch Safety Alert for Arava » - July 14, 2010
